The following is a sample of my Summer Workshops. Every season is beautiful here, so feel free to contact me if you are interested in scheduling a private or group workshop of your own.

at the beautiful shores of
South Lake Tahoe, CA with illustrator, Kristen Schwartz

Anyone can draw. It's a matter of truly seeing rather than merely looking. Whatever your skill level, sketching will increase your ability to translate what you see and feel into powerful visual representations.

Our brains work rapidly to translate what we see into efficient symbols so we can react quickly. This is great when danger is present, but some of us forget to turn that function off when it's time to relax. If you learn to see by sketching, you will automatically switch your brain into a more relaxed mode, a skill that will reduce stress and benefit all areas of your life. Sketching will allow you to enjoy the present moment by truly seeing and connecting with everything around you.

Surrounded by the serenity and beauty of Lake Tahoe, Kristen will teach many different approaches to seeing and capturing all types of subject matter in ways that no camera can do. You will be astonished at what you will accomplish and your sketchbook will become a memorable keepsake of your experiences.

Design is an integral part of illustrating. Being able to successfully employ typographic elements and see the big picture - beyond the illustration - is a major asset. Below are just a few of my design/illustration commissions.

PROJECT - Jim Stamates Low Impact Wildlife Photography
logo and catalog:

PROJECT - Medicine From the Mountains: Medicinal Plants of the Sierra Nevada - botanical illustrations and book design:

PROJECT - Tahoe Lost and Found fund raising event branding and collateral material - illustration, logo, poster, ad, postcard, and auction guide:

When I was 16 I illustrated and designed my first business cards for a band called, The Hedgehogs. I was pretty proficient with a stat camera and typesetter at that point, but that was the dawn of the Apple Age and technology soon changed everything. I loved it and went on to gain illustration and design experience ranging from branding to book design that gave me a solid foundation for everything I do today.
My illustrations feature abundant technical skill in both black and white and color and range from being dream-like to having the clarity and attention to detail that lend my work to botanical illustration. I have been published in a variety of forms from books, magazines, newspapers, and internet, to event and company branding and collateral material.
My web design skills follow my illustration style and rest on a solid base of xhtml and css practices. These practices lead to clean elegant designs, strong search engine results and user friendly sites.
